JAVIER SOTOMAYOR - High Jump World Record Holder for over 20 Years
Cuban track athlete Javier Sotomayor has held the World High Jump record for over 20 years at 8 feet 0.46 inches. Sotomayor was not able to compete in the 1984 or 1988 Olympics while in his prime due to the Cuban boycott of the games. His record is the longest standing achievement in the history of the high jump and no other human has ever eclipsed the 8 foot mark. Sotomayor is famous for wearing Mickey Mouse shirts prior to competition for good luck and truly embodies the spirit of a champion with his achievement. I felt a personal desire to recognize his greatness being a college high jumper myself!
